Fonterra is spending $45 million to upgrade its tanker fleet.
The fleet service centre at Morrinsville has nearly finished building 90 tankers which will hit the road shortly to collect milk from farms around the country, Fonterra director New Zealand operations, Brent Taylor, said.
The Morrinsville team had been completing an average of one tanker build a day, he said.
This year the company had replaced 67 of its existing fleet trucks and added 23 new Volvos.
When the upgrade is complete, there will be more than 500 Fonterra tankers operating – the largest fleet in the country.
The company, New Zealand’s biggest, started introducing Volvo tankers three years ago due to their lower total cost of ownership and because they are more efficient and have lower running costs, Taylor said.
Volvos had sophisticated emission control systems and put out 35 per cent fewer emissions than the older fleet trucks, he said
