Whey protein concentrates sales were up an astounding 52%, mostly due to sales to China and Southeast Asia. Whey protein isolates were up 13%, led by increased sales to Canada, of all places.
But that’s about the only good news in a bleak export picture, says the U.S. Dairy Export Council. Non-fat dry milk and skim milk powder sales were down 9% from a year ago, and cheese exports were down 12%. Butterfat sales were down 33%.
In the first half of 2016, total dairy exports equated to 13.3% of total milk solids, down from 14.5% in the first half of 2015. The total value of U.S. exports was $2.23 billion in the first half of 2016, down 22% from last year and down 43% from a year ago.
