We shouldn't subsidize dairy industry — Charlie Talbert

The State Journal's Aug. 5 editorial, “Fix the safety net for state’s dairy farmers,” cites dairy as a chief engine of Wisconsin’s economy. Unfortunately, the dairy industry is also the chief engine of Wisconsin’s polluted lakes, rivers and steams, contaminated groundwater, and manure-sprayed air.

This year, excess supply has caused financial losses for some dairy operations. In response, the editorial recommends improving the federal dairy program in the next farm bill. What shouldn’t happen is more subsidies. That would continue a decades-long, ruinous public policy that now threatens all of us.
A report by the United Nations’ Environment Program shows that animal products, including dairy, sustain no one in the long term, even if in the short term they continue to financially profit the industries that produce them. If subsidies are needed at all, they should instead be directed at transitioning farmers away from dairy and into raising crops that sustain people, animals and the environment.
