Lyndon Cleggett was getting ready to brave the heat for the afternoon milking when he heard the news of Bega Cheese selling its Warrnambool Cheese and Butter stake to giant Canadian processor Saputo.

Mr Cleggett is a Warrnambool Cheese and Butter supplier who milks over 300 cows in Glencoe, in South Australia’s south-east.

He says a competitive industry is vital if dairy farmers are to survive. He hopes Saputo will bring «outside money» and investment into the industry.

«Survival of dairy farmers is…what we get paid at farm gate – that is the critical point of all this.

«At the end of the day, it’s nice to think that if we have a nice Australian company to supply is terrific, but if it is not supplying us with the best farm gate price, we won’t survive.»
