Fonterra needs 90 new staff for its $100 million milk plant under construction at Waitoa, and judging by online response, it’s going to be a tight squeeze at the dairy giant’s community recruitment day in the Waikato hamlet on Saturday.
It’s only the second time New Zealand’s biggest company has used a community approach to recruiting, and plant operations manager Donald Lumsden said it was an effective way to attract a large number of people.
«It’s as much a promotion and information event, to provide as much information to the community as possible.»
The new hi-tech UHT export processing plant will need skilled staff, as well as unskilled employees.
A good attitude is a priority, he said.
«You need to be fit and healthy, have a great attitude and be open to learn.»
Fonterra’s recruitment website has had 100 inquiries about the Waitoa jobs.
Applicants are expected from neighbouring towns Te Aroha, Morrinsville and Matamata, as well as other parts of Waikato.
Buses will leave Waitoa Hall, venue for the Saturday 10am-2pm event, every 30 minutes to show would-be staff the construction site.
In the hall, displays will showcase some of the work involved, and a team of Fonterra advisers will be on hand.
However all applications would have to be made online, Mr Lumsden said.
There will be a computer workstation at the hall for those keen to apply but who don’t have online access.
The new plant, beside Fonterra’s long-established Waitoa processing factory, is on track for a March operational start.
