The competition tested the industry knowledge of young dairy farmers from across the country.

The challenges included identifying milk quality, analysing pasture varieties and comparing animal health.

The overall winners were from western Victoria, members of the the Young Dairy Development Program.

One of the organisers, Ollie Abblitt, from Glecoe in south-east SA, says it wasn’t all about the competition though.

«People really need to develop strong networks.

«It’s good to have people around the country that they can call on if they are having a bad day, or if they need to problem solve.

«Dairy farmers don’t have much of a social life, so if we get social activities, we take them.»

The first ever challenge has been driven by SA Rural Woman of the Year, Penny Schulz, who had a committee of young farmers helping her organise the event.

Harrisville dairy farmer Paul Roderick, from south-east Queensland, says it’s important to try something new.

«It’s important to encourage the younger people in our industry to stay in the industry and show that there is a future.

«I really think there is a positive outlook for dairy if people have a positive attitude.»
