In total, export of milk powder fell by $118m. The fall was mainly price-driven, as the volume of milk powder exported increased by 0.9%.
China remains the largest destination for milk powder exports, with the UAE second and Algeria third. Exports to Algeria decreased for the month by 45%.
Exports of other dairy products, including butter, natural milk and cheese, increased year-on-year, but, collectively, the entire dairy market exports for the month fell by $88m, 9.5% down on the same month in 2015.
Goods exported
Exports of meat, offal and fruit fell, but the wool industry saw the largest rise in exports, which was 19%.
Exports to Australia rose for July 2016, the only country to do so. In total, exports to the country increased by $37m, or 5.2%, largely due to the rise in demand of food preparations for infant use.
For China, USA, the EU and Japan, all exports were down year-on-year. The EU had the largest decrease at 9.8%.
Goods exported to the UK made up 25% of New Zealand’s total EU exports, but this figure was down year-on-year, mainly due to a fall in the quantity of lamb exported.
