Rancho Feeding Corporation of Petaluma, Calif. is recalling more than 8 million pounds of meat products because they processed «diseased» and «unsound» animals and did so without federal inspection, the USDA said Saturday.
“Thus, the products are adulterated, because they are unsound, unwholesome or otherwise are unfit for human food and must be removed from commerce,” the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced on Saturday.
The products were produced Jan. 1, 2013 through Jan. 7, 2014 and shipped to distribution centers and retail establishments in California, Florida, Illinois and Texas. They include beef carcasses, oxtail, liver, cheeks, tripe, tongue and veal bones.
It was not immediately clear which companies got the products, or if they were sold in some form at any markets or restaurants.
Last month the company recalled more than 40,000 pounds of meat products produced on Jan. 8 that also didn’t undergo a full inspection.
The problems were discovered as part of an ongoing investigation, the FSIS said.
A call to the company went unanswered.
FSIS says they have received no reports of illness.
The USDA classified the recall as a Class 1, “a health hazard situation where there is a reasonable probability that the use of the product will cause serious, adverse health consequences or death.”
