The United States Department of Agriculture reported this afternoon that U.S. milk production was up 1% in November over year ago levels. This is the first time milk production was up since July.Total cow numbers were actually down 20,000 head from a year ago, but up 7,000 over the last month.
Wisconsin reported the largest milk increase in total volume, up 99 million lb. (4.7%) over October. Cow numbers in the Badger State were up 6,000 head. Kansas and Ohio also reported strong milk growth, with Kansas up 6.1% and Ohio up 4.5. Although cow numbers were up slightly in this two states, most of the volume jump came from increased milk per cow.
California reported 2.3% less volume in November, even though cow numbers were up 2,000 head from both last month and a year ago. New Mexico showed the largest percentage decline in milk volume, down 4% with cow numbers down 10,000 head compared to last year. Texas was also down 3.7% and reported 5,000 fewer cows than a year ago.
Idaho reported a 2.3% gain in milk volume, New York was up 3.2% and Pennsylvania was up 0.4%. Minnesota was up 4.5%.
