The announcement was heralded by Mercy for Animals, an organization claiming responsibility for undercover video taken at Canada’s largest farm, Chilliwack Cattle Company, Chilliwack, British Columbia. The video, released to the public June 9, 2014, showed animal abuse and resulted in discarding of the farms’ milk for several days.
In their press release, Saputo cited a zero tolerance for animal cruelty, a commitment to end tail docking, and using minimum industry standard pain control during disbudding and dehorning.
The new Saputo Dairy Care Program will be offered at both the University of Guelph and the Ontario Veterinary College. The company is also contributing to the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Veterinary medicine throughthe Dairyland Initiative and the development of the LifeStep™ Program that will focus on low-stress cattle handling approaches, lameness prevention and end of life management.
Saputo products are sold in over 40 countries, and is one of the top three cheese producers in the U.S.
