Police began testing samples of infant formula after concerned members of the public found what looked to be possible pinpricks in the lids.

But the tests have come back all clear for the 1080 poison and the infant formula in those tins was safe for babies to consume, police said on Thursday.

The apparent tampering is being put down to normal manufacturing or handling issues.

Despite the negative test, police say the parents did the right thing.

«Police and other agencies would like to thank the public for their continued vigilance when buying infant and other formula,» police said in a statement.

Last week, the police told public they were investigating anonymous letters which were sent to Fonterra and Federated Farmers in November last year, threatening to put 1080 pesticide in infant formula if the government didn’t stop their 1080 drops by the end of March.

About 52,000 tests have been carried out so far on New Zealand products, but no 1080 has been detected.
