The fifth annual B.C. Dairy Industry Conference kicked off today (November 27) in Vancouver. While the message was undoubtably pro-milk inside the Fairmont Pacific Rim Hotel, activists from People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals were outside sharing an alternative view.

«Drinking milk and consuming other dairy products not only supports animal abuse but also can lead to heart disease, diabetes, and even acne,» PETA campaigner Emily Lavender said in a media alert sent out before the protest. «Anyone who values the special relationship between a mother and her baby—no matter the species—should dump dairy products and switch to soy, rice, almond, or any of the other delicious and healthy plant-based milk options on the market.»

One eight-year-old protester wore a cow costume in order to illustrate their point that cows produce milk for calves—which are taken away from their mothers soon after birth—not humans.

The three-day conference, organized by the B.C. Dairy Association and the B.C. Milk Marketing Board, features a keynote address by CBC News journalist Ian Hanomansing on Thursday (November 28) at the Vancouver Convention Centre. It wraps up on Friday (November 29).
