The world’s largest dairy processor, New Zealand-owned Fonterra, believes it’s making significant progress in restoring consumer confidence in its product in China.

Last year, exports to China were suspended after Fonterra dairy produce tested positive to bacterial contamination.

Just last week, Fonterra pleaded guilty to four charges laid by the New Zealand Government, including exporting product not fit for human consumption.

In the latest of a series of diplomatic meetings, New Zealand Prime Minister John Key and Fonterra chairman John Wilson are in China this week.

Fonterra Australia’s Judith Swales admits its been difficult to claw back the company’s credibility.

«It was a defining moment for the organisation, and as recently as yesterday I heard our CEO say it’s changed the company for ever. We’ll never be the same and we’ll be much more cognisant in everything that we do.»
