Harrop explained Canadian dairy farmers created a new class price for milk protein concentrates to be competitive with the milk coming in from the US and now Canadian producers are using domestic products instead of buying them from the U.S. Trump spoke out against Canada on Tuesday in a way he’s not done before, saying Canada has been «very, very unfair» to dairy farmers and «we’re going to start working on that».
A spokeswoman for Dairy Farmers of America was not immediately able to provide a number of Wisconsin farmers that it had signed to contracts, or what the terms of the agreements were.
If the Trump administration can not figure out a more constructive strategy for resolving trade and border disputes with our neighbors, concerns about Canada’s trade policy hurting 75 Wisconsin farmers might seem relatively trivial. They persuaded regulators to create a new lower-priced class of industrial milk as an incentive to get dairies to produce protein substances in Canada, using Canadian milk.
That’s according to Minnesota Department of Agriculture spokeswoman Margaret Hart. But Canada’s decision to change its milk pricing policy has sparked a bitter war of words between US and Canada and has escalated trade tensions between the two countries.
The policy change was made official in February. Sjostrom said many processors worked hard to find space for the surplus milk. Canada also places import tariffs and other measures to protect its dairy industry. Our supply management system, known globally as Canada’s milk cartel, faces inevitable change.
On Tuesday, the federal government levied a tariff on Canadian lumber, The Associated Press reported, adding that about half of the farms dropped by Grassland Dairy have found new buyers.
I appreciate all of the effort that has been focused on addressing this dire situation from my colleagues in the State Legislature all the way up to President Trump and his administration. «We have more milk than we can process», said Howrigan. «Thanks for supporting WI dairy farmers!»
While the dairy, livestock and agriculture industries are in a crisis mode – due to the lack of an available labor force to take care of the nation’s animals and grow food – legislators on Capitol Hill appear not interested in moving immigration reform policy anytime soon. «Production has continued to surge in the U.S.as herds in the Southwest and Midwest have grown at an aggressive pace, which has led to an abundance of milk».
The move affects some 58 farms in Wisconsin, plus others in NY state. More than 70 percent of Mexico’s dairy imports come from America. «Well, it looks like Canada may have fired the first shot», he said.
Of course, smaller farmers growing for a larger variety of buyers would not be as productive as huge agribusiness. Trump is also reportedly considering an executive order on withdrawing the US from NAFTA. «I think it’s clearly gotten Canada’s attention».
With the United States now exporting 14% to 16% of its production, what happens in Canada, Mexico, New Zealand, Europe and China has a huge impact on milk prices in NY and California and every point in between. There are only seven days left for dozens of dairy farms who are at risk of shutting down because of a trade dispute with Canada.
