“All of a sudden my ears started to hurt and I heard high pitch squeals. I just said, it’s got to be a tornado.”
Just down the street from Leslie’s home, a large dairy farm with about 3,500 cows was destroyed.
Bud Chase, who works at De Vor Dairy had this to say about the damage. “It makes you sick. Honestly. Never would have dreamed it would happen here.”
De Vor dairy had just finished building a new barn Monday, but after that night, they’ll have to re-build everything.
The tornado destroyed the barns, buildings, and left thousands of cows stranded. But overnight, farms from all over the area offered their barns to house about 3,000 of the cattle.
Including people like Josh Elenbaum who took some of the cows to his own farm. “You feel bad for the guy, I mean it’s an ordeal and we wanted to help out the best we could, do everything we could for him,” Elenbaum said.
“People helping people, that’s what farmers do. We can’t thank anyone enough for what they’ve done,” Chase said.
Around 300 neighbors and friends, some from more than 100 miles away, have pitched in to help clean up the dairy farm.
“Because you’re supposed to help other people. I’m someone who likes to help people. They pull together. I had to bring my own little wagon,» said Diane Kingsland, who showed up to help clean up.
A community brought together in a time of need.
“You see a lot of bad in the world, and you see all this good. This all came together today by all the neighbors coming out, doing their thing,” said Pat Devlin who came to help out.
About 40 head of cattle were lost, but mainly it was the buildings that were damaged.
