Implementation of Sound Breeding Policy for cattle reviewed

POONCH: A meeting of prominent dairy farmers, veterinary doctors of animal husbandry department, retired practicing veterinarians and field para veterinary staff of the district was held at District Veterinary Hospital here on Saturday, an official press note read.
A thorough discussion regarding adoption of a Sound Breeding Policy for cattle wealth of the district was held wherein feedback and suggestions were sought from all the stakeholders.
Retired Superintendent, DVH Poonch, Dr Harbeer Singh, presided over the meeting while Chief Animal Husbandry Officer, Dr Mohd Younis and Senior Veterinararian Dr Hoshiyar Singh were also present in the meeting.
Manager, Frozen Semen Bank Jammu, Dr Ramesh Razdan, stressed on maintaining a blood line only up to 62.5% in the crossbreeding process. He also stressed the farmers to know and ask for details of the bull/semen straw being used for crossing of their respective cows.
“Proper Breeding is the ultimate key towards increasing milk yield and success of a dairy farmer and has to be adopted on scientific lines,” Dr Harbeer Singh maintained.
According to the press note, Gali Pindi, block Poonch and Seri Khawaja in Surankote block shall be developed as Sahiwal belts in coming months. Besides, storage facilities of liquid nitrogen at deep local levels shall be strengthened and augmented by creation of a base centre and establishment of two of 70 litre capacity new semen banks at the head quarter level.
A demonstration of growing Azolla (a fern known as shill in dogri), the most economic feed supplement for cattle and other animals, was also given to the farmers besides various queries were clarified by Azolla expert Dr Razdan, presently Manager Frozen Semen Bank Jammu, the press note further added.
