And in a newly released study, the stats back it up.
This new study comes out of the University of Idaho.
In the past 30 years, the Gem State has grown to be one of the nation’s top dairy producers.
Ranking 3rd overall in production, head count and processing.
The Idaho Dairy Industry has experienced significant growth in the past three decades.
Idaho’s production gains were due to both an increase in the number of dairy cows and an increase in the productivity of Idaho’s dairies.
The annual milk production per cow, since 1980, has increased from 12,641 pound per cow rising in 2012, to 23,376 pounds per cow.
That’s an 85% increase in 32 years.
And the head count has also risen in the last 30 years, up 280%.
From 153,000 heads in 1980… To 581,000 in 2012.
And it’s the Magic Valley leading the way for the Gem State.
With Gooding County, accounting for 150,000 head alone.
As for the jobs the dairy industry creates.
In 2012 the industry accounted for 23,000 jobs for the Idaho economy.
With foreign and domestic exports contributing roughly 2.5 billion dollars.
But the only negative aspect of the industry is processing.
California and Wisconsin takes the number one and two spots respectively.
And although Idaho has been ranked high for milk production and head count.
The Gem State is traditionally ranked around 15th in terms of processing jobs.
In 2012, the Idaho milk processing industries held around 2,800 jobs, up 1,600 jobs since 2001.
A trend that seems to be rising, giving the diary industry in Idaho a leg up on becoming the nation’s best.
