The offenders entered the Rototuna Foodmart on Hukanui Road at 2.30pm on Monday wearing hoodies and sunglasses.
«They told us to hand everything over or they will stab us,» Nimesh Patel said.
«We were very scared – it’s the first time we have had anything like this.»
The two offenders were in the store for about five minutes taking cash and cigarettes.
«They took the expensive cigarettes – it was like they were robbing to order.»
While the robbers were behind the counter taking the cash and items the two workers ran outside to look for help.
They stole hundreds of dollars in cash, up to 40 packets of cigarettes and electronic vapour cigarettes before fleeing.
A police cordon was stretched across the frontage of the Hukanui Rd premises while police investigated.
The dairy has been targeted before – in August 2015 owner Rupan Patel wrestled a gun of a would-be robber.
No-one was injured in the latest robbery, and police have spoken with the owner and some witnesses.
Police are also looking for five people seen in an old-model Toyota near the store at the time of the robbery.
«We would like to speak to the people who were in an older-model white Toyota Corona,» Waikato police Senior Sergeant Pete van de Wetering said.
One woman and four men were seen in the vehicle in the vicinity of Hukanui Rd, he said.
«We don’t know precisely the situation regarding the car but we would like to speak to them.»
Police were reviewing CCTV footage of the robbery.
The robbery happened the same day as another in the Waikato town of Ngaruawahia.
An armed man stormed Mills Pricecutter dairy, on Whatawhata Avenue about 11am, while an elderly husband and wife were working.
It was too early to say whether or not the two robberies could be linked.
