The global dairy market declined by 9 per cent in 2015 and further decline has been seen in 2016, according to market research expert Euromonitor.
The gap in the market left by the war on sugar has left a space for dairy with milk products able to take advantage of a drop in popularity of sugary snacks.
Flavoured milk drinks increased in popularity across Western Europe, North America, Middle East and Africa and Latin America.
Consumption of all dairy products besides flavoured milk has fallen in Western Europe.
However, in the Asia Pacific region there were increases in every category barring flavoured milk.
Milk alternatives
Milk alternatives have also continued to grow, increasing by 8.7 per cent in Western Europe and 14 per cent in the Middle East and Africa.
Milk sales have decreased 5.9 per cent in North America and 3.8 per cent in Western Europe.
Lianne Van Den Bos, senior food analyst, said: «The dairy industry, predictably, has been up in arms about this shift away from dairy to alternatives and proactively advocated about milk’s excellent health benefits, and it is starting to pay off.
«Our data shows both milk alternatives as well as dairy products can perform well in 2016 and not necessarily take share from one another,» she said.
«That in turn suggests consumers can be swayed either way and it is the health proposition which sells.»
