Details of a Fonterra project to increase efficiency is being kept under wraps though it was plain to see the new infrastructure as it was installed at the co-operative’s Longburn site.

A crane was on site yesterday installing one of a number of new silos at the plant near Palmerston North.

Fonterra’s Longburn site manager Bill Boakes said the installation of the silo was part of a project to improve transport efficiency between sites.

Boakes said he was unable to go into further detail.

He said details of the project would be revealed in August once the project was complete.

There are a total of five silos being installed at the site over the next week.

«There are three silos in place with another two on the way from the Waikato,» Boakes said.

The silos are used for storing raw milk and each silo weighs about 12 tonne and is 3m in diameter.

The silos had to be transported separately by truck and lifted by crane.

Crane owner and operator Barry Jagger said their biggest crane, typically used on the region’s wind farms, was transported in six parts and had to be reassembled at the site to move the silos.
