#Fonterra products recalled after botulism scare

Two infant formula products and a calf milk replacer have been recalled in New Zealand as a result of the Fonterra botulism scare, while a drink made by Coca-Cola in China has also been recalled.
Six of the eight companies have now been named.
Health company Vitaco Health Group and Chinese food and beverage company Hangzhou Wahaha have used the contaminated whey, but their processing methods eliminated the threat of botulism.
Maxim International, an Australian livestock feed company, was reported as saying all its affected product had not reached the market.
An unnamed company in Vietnam has issued a recall.
The other company was unnamed.
The recalls come after Fonterra said 38 tonnes of a type of whey protein concentrate it produced had been contaminated with the bacteria that can cause botulism.
The Ministry for Primary Industries recommended two Nutricia infant formula products from the Karicare range should be avoided.
It was broader than Nutricia’s own recall.MPI recalled Nutricia Karicare Infant Formula Stage 1 for babies from birth, and Nutricia Karicare Stage 2 Follow-on formula for children from six months old.
Nutricia New Zealand said it was recalling only certain batch numbers of the products:Karicare Infant Formula Stage 1 (0-6 months) in New Zealand only with batch numbers 3169 and 3170.
Karicare Gold+ Follow On Formula Stage 2 (6-12 months) in New Zealand only with batch number D3183.
The batch number and use by date could be found on the base of the tin.Nutricia said none of the products tested and sold in New Zealand had indicated any contamination, but given information from Fonterra it had decided to made a precautionary recall.Fonterra animal feed subsidiary NZAgbiz recalled calf milk replacer sold in the North Island that contains traces of the affected whey protein concentrate.
Agbiz said most of the affected product was still in stock, with a small amount sold to customers.
Coca-Cola Greater China said it had quarantined 4775 kg out of the total shipment of 4800 kg of whey protein it received.
Use of the remaining 25kg was limited to one batch of pineapple flavour Minute Maid Pulpy Milky, produced on March 5, 2013, and shipped to three provinces in China.
All products from the batches in question that were found in the market would be recalled  Vitaco Health Group said its Aussie Bodies UHT (ultra high temperature) sports drinks contained whey protein from one of the batches concerned, but the UHT process had eliminated any risk.
