First Milk has confirmed its cheese packing plant in Wrexham, Wales will close this spring with the loss of 230 jobs. In October, they announced it was planning to shut its Maelor packing operation at Marchwiel, Wrexham, in May 2014 after losing a major contract from superstore giant Asda.

The First Milk news was a bitter pill to swallow after business chiefs announced last year they were planning a £17m revamp of the Maelor facility.

It packs more than 30,000 tons of cheese a year of which Asda provided about 20,000 tons worth.

Company bosses said, with a site as large as Maelor which has a certain amount of fixed costs, it would not be economically viable to scale the operation down and operate with a reduced volume after the loss of the Asda contract.

First Milk is the UK’s only major dairy company which is 100% owned by British farmers, supplying dairy products and ingredients for national and international markets.

It bought the facility from Dairy Crest in 2006.
