Federated Farmers is standing by Fonterra, as it dumps milk byproducts in the sea, and on farms in Waikato and Taranaki.

It’s receiving huge volumes of milk, as mild weather’s caused milk production throughout the North Island to peak.

Taranaki Federated Farmers dairy chairman Bryce Kaiser believes it’s more environmentally friendly for Fonterra to get rid of the byproducts, than for farmers to dispose of the raw milk themselves.

He says he’d have to dilute every litre of milk in 10 to 15 litres of water, before he could spread it over his pasture.

«I have a 16,000 litre vat so it would require a lot of water and there’s only so much milk you can put onto the pasture at any one time before you risk it becoming toxic.»
