Farmers need more for flat #milk supply

The Western Australian dairy industry is calling for reform to the state’s milk pricing structure in 2014.

Representative body WA Farmers argues that if the state’s dairy processors require a year-round flat supply of milk from producers, they should be expected to pay accordingly.

“Ideally, the processors would like about the same amount of milk rolling in each day. Because we are basically a drinking milk state, the daily requirement for WA is pretty even,” says WA Farmers dairy section president, Phil Depiazzi.

“If they do want flat supply, that means they’re going to have to pay a higher price to achieve that.”

His comments come as the dairy industry readies itself for another year of production, following 12 months dogged by criticism of unstainable milk prices and continued discomfort at the power of the major retailers.

Mr Depiazzi believes the desire to be paid more per litre during months of higher input costs represents a reasonable expectation.

“Our grass-growing season is from May until the end of November, and obviously the milk we can produce off grass is our cheapest milk. What we would like to see is farmers maximising that,” he says.

“That doesn’t mean we won’t have milk through the summer months, because there are other farmers who have irrigation, and they will produce through those periods.

“If [processors] want flat supply through there, then there is a cost to producing milk through those months and that needs to be recognised and reflected in the price that farmers receive.”
