Ex-dairy farmers Peter Harkin and Evan Wilson were visiting Rockhampton from Port Campbell in Victoria.
Mr Harkin said despite the dry conditions the cattle were in better nick than he expected.
“We were quite surprised,” he said.
“We’ve seen a lot of poor looking cattle coming through and the ones out there looked quite good.
“The prices are actually very similar to what they are at home. We weren’t expecting that because of how dry it is.”
He said the sale facility was quite different to the ones he was used to.
“The big difference is the kind of cattle and the yards aren’t wet and muddy like they are at home,” he said.
“They’ve definitely taken into account safety here as well.
“They remind me a bit of the new yards, the revamped yards down in Monto.”
Mr Harkin said farmers in Victoria were also feeling the strain of drought.
“On the coast is OK and the dairies are doing good too,” he said.
“It’s the cropping country that is doing it tough. It’s quite dry in those areas.”
Mr Harkin said he was worried that securing feed in the form of hay could become an issue.
“It’s got to come from somewhere,” he said.
“There’s a bit of a shortage in Victoria at the moment and farmers are having to go interstate for hay.
“If there’s no rain the producers can’t grow any more hay for the graziers to give their livestock – it’s a bit scary.”
