It was the first time the creatures had set foot on British soil since the Bronze Age.
But the farmer has now been forced to destroy seven of the cows due to their ferocious nature. The meat was turned into sausages which Mr Gow said were «very tasty» and a bit like venison.
He said: «We have had to cut our herd down to six because some of them were incredibly aggressive and we just couldn’t handle them.
«The ones we had to get rid of would just attack you any chance they could. They would try to kill anyone. Dealing with that was not a lot of fun at all.
«They are by far and away the most aggressive animals I have ever worked with.»
Now that the herd has been reduced to a managable size, Mr Gow hopes to start breeding the animals for meat, which he said was considered a delicacy in Germany.
«I’m not sure how appealing Third Reich sausages would be,» he joked. «But they are very tasty.»
German zoologists Heinz and Lutz Heck were commissioned by members of the Nazi party to produce a breed of cattle based on aurochs, a species of ancient wild bull.
The pair traced the species’ descendants to domestic breeds and managed to «pull the wild genes out», creating the cattle in the ’20s and ’30s.
The Hecks’ programme at zoos in Berlin and Munich was so successful that the new aurochs flourished and were used in propaganda material during World War II.
The cattle were largely destroyed following the defeat of Nazism in 1945.
However, some survived in nature conservation parks in mainland Europe, and 13 Heck bulls and cows were imported from Belgium to Mr Gow’s farm in 2009.
The Heck cattle are shorter than the aurochs, but retain the muscular build, deep brown complexion, and shaggy, coffee-coloured fringe.
Mr Gow said: «What the Germans did with their breeding programme was create something truly primeval.
«Importing the cattle has been an interesting project for us – they have such an unusual history.
«There was a thinking around that time that you could selectively breed animals for Aryan characteristics, which were rooted in runes, folklore and legend.»
The cattle, which have lethal-looking horns and a muscular build, are unlike any modern breed of cow and have little commercial value.
However, Mr Gow said there were significant from a conservation point of view, producing their own body weight in dung every year, which is a great source of food for insects and bugs.
The farmer added: «Some were perfectly calm and quiet and they are the ones we have kept. The others you could not go near.
«We made sure no one went near them so there were never any incidents. To get them into the trailer to get them off the farm we used a young and very athletic young man to stand on the ramp and they charged at him before he quickly jumped out the way.
«They were so aggressive that was the only way. But that was as near as they came. No one else went anywhere near them.
«When the Germans were selecting them to create this animal they used Spanish fighting cattle to give them the shape and ferocity they wanted.
«The reason the Nazis were so supportive of the project is they wanted them to be fierce and aggressive
«Since they have gone it is all peaceful again. Peace reigns supreme on the farm.
«Despite these problems, I have no regrets at all. It has been a good thing to do and the history of them is fascinating.»
