The Karnataka Milk Federation (KMF), which is the largest supplier of milk in the State, has procured adequate milk to meet the growing demand for the festival which is celebrated across the world after the end of fasting month of Ramzan.
According to officials in KMF, the demand for milk has increased from 2.25 lakh litres last year to 2.60 lakh litres this year in the district. Besides, 40,000 litres are supplied by private agencies which put the total demand for milk at around 3 lakh litres.
“We have made required arrangements to supply adequate quantity of milk to the people here through our vendors and agencies. We are making sure that people get milk as per their needs to celebrate the festival,” D. Ashok, Managing Director of KMF’s Vijayapura-Bagalkot Cooperative Milk Federation, said.
He said that everyday, Vijayapura and Bagalkot produce around 1.42 lakh litres of milk, of which 61,000 litres is sold in the two districts.
“Now, the demand has increased four times in the twin districts and we have procured around 80,000 litres from the Shivamogga federation to meet the demand,” Mr. Ashok said. He said that at present, Vijayapura district needs 21,000 litres daily. However, for the festival, the demand has reached to 60,000 litres.
Similarly, for Bagalkot, the daily demand is around 9,000 litres, which has increased to 25,000 litres for Id.
To a question, he said that besides the 35 regular vehicles, an additional 12 heavy containers have been deployed to supply milk.
