According to Arla Food Ingredients, and reported in the trade press, demand for high quality dairy proteins is set to rise dramatically in the coming years as manufacturers and consumers begin to realise their full potential.
Supplies of diary proteins, such as whey, have come under global pressure recently as the appeal of protein as an ingredient has broadened among consumers, according to John Keane the Milan Office Manager at Bord Bia – Irish Food Board.
Once the domain of high performance sports enthusiasts, dairy protein is now increasingly seen as a wholesome and nutritious ingredient being sought by mainstream consumers.
However, according to Arla, current demand barely scratches the surface of what is possible.
Demand for high quality protein is now coming from all sides. For example there is the fitness enthusiast who is looking at whey protein for its muscle building properties; the female consumers, who are looking for weight management solutions; male consumers looking to maintain a good and wholesome diet; and parents who just want better nutrition for their children.
In addition there is the bakery industry, where whey protein is replacing eggs in the manufacturing process.
Furthermore there is the specialist market of clinical nutrition.
Here, demand is being driven by the world’s aging population which stands to benefit greatly from a diet enhanced by high quality dairy proteins such as whey.
