The dairy industry is watching the legal battle in Western Australia, over a farmer’s right to grow genetically modified crops, with great interest.

The Dairy Co-operative Research Centre is developing GM ryegrass to help cows produce more milk.

Dairy Australia’s Paula Fitzgerald says commercial release of the pasture is at least seven years off.

«While that’s showing some promising results, particularly with some of the modelling work that’s done, it’s still a way to go with doing an agronomic assessment of that and then ultimately putting that in the marketplace.»

Mr Fitzgerland says before that happens, the dairy sector needs to engage more with the community about what its trying to achieve with its GM pasture.

«What we learnt from the GM canola journey was that we also have to look at market and trade considerations.

«So what we’re talking about in WA is essentially that it’s about market and trade, people meeting expectations of their customers.

«As pasture goes forward, we’ll start to think about that.»
