#Dairy Export Volumes Drop for EU Countries and Australia

The volume of dairy products exported from EU countries fell 10% during the first quarter of 2013 compared to the same quarter in 2012. Exports to Russia, the largest destination for EU dairy produces was up 18% but volumes to China and Algeria were down by 20% and 13% respectively.
Exports of skim milk powder (SMP) and whole milk powder (WMP) were significantly less, falling by 35% and 17% respectively. Exports of whey based products were also down.
Dairy export volumes out of Australia were also down by 5% during the first quarter of 2013 compared to a year ago.
Australia did manage to push up export volumes to its two largest dairy trade partners: Japan and China, but exports to Singapore, Indonesia and Malaysia were all down.
Exports of milkfats and cheese were up significantly but this was more than offset by smaller milk powder exports.
A similar trend was evident in Argentina where export volumes were down 16% in the first quarter of this year. Particularly impacted were thenearby markets of Brazil and Venezuela.
