The South American nation has a relatively small milk pool but also has 53 free trade agreements with countries across the world.
Fonterra global ingredients sales and product sourcing director Fabrizio Jorge said while western European countries, Australia and New Zealand could not export to Russia, Chile still could.
“It also has free access, on a quota basis, to the US market,” Mr Jorge said.
Chile is also part of the Mercosur free trade agreement with its neighbours.
“Absolutely it results in a good price for farmers,” he said. “Australia can make the most of our free trade agreement with Chile by sending cheese to Chile and then it can be exported from there.”
Mr Jorge said Fonterra owned a dairy brand in Chile, Soprole, that was better known than Coca-Cola in that country.
