The original deadline had been Dec. 4. But the California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA) extended the deadline last week, citing the disruption of recent California wildfires.
For the proposed QIP to be approved, at least 51% of the total number of milk producers in the state must vote and at least 51% of those voting who produce at least 65% of the total amount of milk produced by all producers who voted in the referendum, or at least 65% of those voting who produced at least 51% of the total amount of milk produced in the California during August 2017 vote in favor.
The new plan must be approved for the quota program to continue if California dairy farmers also vote to implement a Federal Milk Marketing Order for the state. The United States Department of Agriculture has yet to issue a final rule on the new California Federal Order, and no date for a referendum has been set.
