The Gipplsand dairy company is launching its “Pure Source Milk” fresh milk product in Taiwan today.
Burra Foods marketing and business development manager Evan Scicluna said Pure Source Milk brand would have a strong focus on regional provenance back to the company’s Gippsland farmers through a “farm finder” QR code on each pack.
Mr Scicluna said Taiwanese milk customers would be able use the code to find videos, images and information about the farms that supply Burra Foods.
All the packaging and information accessed via the QR code was in English at the request of Taiwanese customers but the company was considering translation into different languages.
He said the company was considering export to other Asian countries but would not disclose which.
Burra will package the milk using a 60-day extended shelf life process.
“We are not standardising the milk (to specified fat and protein levels),” Mr Scicluna said.
“We want the milk to be as natural as it is from the farm.”
The packaged milk will be shipped by sea to Taiwan, taking about 15 to 18 days, depending on the weather.
That gave it about a 30-day shelf life after allowing for transportation times.
It will be sold in about 5000 premium distribution points across Taiwan.
“This is a major export opportunity for us,” Mr Scicluna said.
“The whole reason why we are doing this is because we want to add as much value as we can to every litre of milk.
“Taiwanese consumers drink over 15 million litres of premium imported fresh milk every year.
“There is already a positive preconception of Australian agriculture and we plan to take it one step further by promoting Gippsland as Australia’s premier dairy region.”
Mr Scicluna said Burra was considering using the Pure Source Milk brand name to its other export products but no decision had been made.
Victorian Trade Minister Philip Dalidakis said the Government was backing the company in its drive to promote Gippsland’s dairy products on the world stage.
“Victoria has a well-deserved reputation for producing premium food and beverage products and Burra Foods is a great example of how regional Victorian companies are taking these products to the world,” Mr Dalidakis said.
