The family-run NEMi dairy in Cheshire, has started selling fresh liquid milk directly to Qatar in the Middle East.
Improved refrigeration methods mean fresh milk can be flown the 4,335 miles from England and sold in a chain of hypermarket shops called LuLu in Qatar.
NEMi dairy is currently supplying an average of 5,000l of milk per week to Qatar. NEMi has five farms supplying its milk, with each farm running a herd of around 250 dairy cows.
All the cows have selenium yeast added to their diet, which makes their milk rich in selenium. A spokesperson for NEMi, said that although the selenium was initially added for a herd health benefit, it was this selenium enriched milk that attracted LuLu.
Qatar previously sourced fresh liquid milk from Saudi Arabia, but due to a cooling in diplomatic relations local retailers started to look elsewhere for supplies.
