Barbwire: March brings activities for dairy farmers

Dairy farmers, their families and friends are invited to attend the Holmes County Dairy Recognition Banquet to be held Monday evening, March 26, at 7 p.m. at the Carlisle Inn, Walnut Creek.

The meal will feature ribs and chicken. Tickets will be available at the door and cost is $10 for adults and $4 for children. The meeting promotes dairy farming and there will be a presentation of awards. It will be a special evening of fun, fellowship and good food. Everyone is welcome. The Spring Dairy Expo, as part of the Purebred Dairy Cattle Association, showcases great dairy cows, dedicated people and the incredible youth who make up Ohio’s dairy industry. The 2018 show will be at the Ohio State Fairgrounds, Columbus, March 29-31. Entries were due March 1; however late entries at $50 each for milking and dry cows and heifers can be made until March 24. All entries made the week of the show will cost $100 in cash.
The Red and White show and the Guernsey show will be March 29 at 6 p.m. The Mideast Spring National Holstein Show (dry cows and heifers) will be March 30 at 7:30 a.m. The Spring Dairy Expo Jersey Show (begins with cows) will be at 10 a.m. March 30. The Spring Dairy Expo Brown Swiss Show, Ayrshire Show and Milking Shorthorn Show will be at 6 p.m. March 30. The Mideast National Holstein Show (cows) will be March 31 at 9 a.m. Selection of the Supreme Champion will take place at noon. The closing of Spring Dairy Expo takes place at 2 p.m. Saturday.
Sales taking place at Spring Dairy Expo will be the Buckeye Dairy Club Holstein Sale at 11:30 March 29; Buckeye Dairy Club Jersey Sale, 12:30 p.m. March 29; The Midwest Revue Sale, March 29 at 2:30 p.m.; Triple T/Heath Sale, 6 p.m. March 29; March 30 sales include Ayrshires, 11 a.m.; Milking Shorthorn Sale, 12:30 p.m.; Guernsey Sale, 1:30 p.m.
National Agriculture Week will be celebrated March 18-24 and National Agriculture Day is March 20 and will be celebrated with special events in areas including Washington, D.C., where there will be a Press Club Event with well-known panelists to discuss the topic, “The Consumer, The Farmer, Sustainability” and “The Taste of Agriculture” reception will be held.
I will be in Sidney this week working with the Ohio Holstein Convention Sale to be held March 9 at 11 a.m. at the Shelby County Fairgrounds. An outstanding group of registered Holsteins, all ages, and embryo packages will be selling. Saturday, March 10, the Ohio Holstein Association annual meeting will be held at the Days Inn Sidney Conference Center. We are hoping Mother Nature will look kindly upon everyone as they travel from far and wide to participate in and enjoy the many activities and events happening in March.
