Sarah Parker, a dairy farmer from Victoria’s Goulburn Valley, became the new Australian Women in Agriculture president after the group held its national conference in Canberra at the weekend.
She said a lack of mobile phone and internet services was holding back people in regional areas.
«We call it the digital divide, where you aren’t able to access the internet at a capacity and capability that someone in the city may have.
«And [to] not have the same tools that you actually do need to run a successful business.»
More than 100 women attended the national conference, where members discussed policies to help empower women in regional areas.
Mrs Parker said he conference also identified a clear path for the organisation to better help women in agriculture.
«[For] a lot of women, we do a lot of roles and we wear a lot of hats.
«We’d like to as an organisation provide some opportunities for women to participate in leadership opportunities, finding out how we can influence the political agenda and provide input into decision making.»
As a dairy farmer in Victoria’s north, Mrs Parker said she personally hoped her industry would improve lines of communication between processors and farmers.
