With the demand for sheep milk growing, a Waikato milk processing plant is willing to collect new milk within a two-hour drive.
Maui Milk general manager Peter Gatley told Kate Hawkesby he hopes more farmers jump on board.
«We now have the ability to supply the rams so the farmers can start breeding the sheep. Everything else is fully available, you know the infrastructure, the rotary platform, the knowledge about nutrition and so on.»
He said he expects the industry to take off within the next few years.
«Our focus is not primarily on size, it’s on sustainability. I’m talking sustainability of the farming system, profitability for the farmers, stability of payout and the impact on the environment.»
