Senator Kirsten Gillibrand is taking a closer look at what renegotiating NAFTA would mean for dairy farmers in the Empire State.
Gillibrand says now could be the time to improve terms with Canada — a big market for New York farmers. She says in the past few years, Canada has blocked New York dairy producers with their own domestic subsidies.
Gillibrand wants to see that change in the Trump administration’s new trade discussions.
A total of $127 million from the USDA is set to support the dairy industry, and Gillibrand wants to see those payments issued immediately.
«Our dairy farmers deserve that basic fairness, and the Trump administration owes it to them to help them bear the burden of this trade war.»
This push comes as dairy farmers are dealing with historically low dairy prices.
