Dairy farmers are hurting but we can’t give up on 10c/l milk levy

When Queensland Dairyfarmers’ Organisation started the campaign to have supermarkets put a 10 cent/litre Drought Levy on all fresh milk, our dairy farmers had hope.

The levy would enable embattled dairy farmers crippled by drought to have a chance.
But last week’s betrayal by Woolworths and Coles by implementing the levy on a single product line means that without a doubt our industry will fail in Queensland, New South Wales and likely Western Australia.
10 cents on a single line will make next to no difference to their suppliers.
To add insult to injury, Coles has said that the levy will be paid via the National Farmers Federation. The NFF has a sponsorship arrangement with Coles which means that they are firmly in their pocket and will do their bidding. Coles’ refusal to pay directly through Norco shows how little respect they have for their supplier relationships.
In its media statement, Coles announced that the levy would be applied until the end of the year. This shows a complete lack of respect or understanding for the reality of drought since it will take a minimum of 12 months for the industry to get on its feet after we get decent rainfall across Australia.
It doesn’t take a finance or marketing genius to realise that the duopoly’s intention was to make the issue go away quickly.
Our industry cannot allow for the full Drought Levy to not be implemented across all milk, all sizes and in all states. We urge shoppers to use their own bargaining power to choose branded milk and continue to ask them to support a boycott of Coles. They put our industry where it is today, so the onus is on them.
