Deputy Prime Minister Barnaby Joyce, who met farmers and dairy leaders in Shepparton on Wednesday, says the industry downturn would be short lived and global demand for Australian dairy products would remain strong.
«We’ll find our way through this and we’ll continue on,» Mr Joyce told reporters.
He also denied there was a need to introduce «exit packages» for farmers struggling to stay afloat.
Mr Joyce danced around questions as to whether he would announce other packages for the industry, but it’s understood they could be announced as early as Thursday.
Agriculture groups want a long-term plan and have warned the number of dairy farmers in the region could drop by 30 per cent because they can no longer keep operating.
