The USDA’s 2013 milk production forecast has been reduced from last month, reflecting recent slower growth in milk production than previously anticipated.
However, there was no change in the milk production forecast for 2014 in the latest World Agricultural Supply and Demand Estimates (WASDE) report.
The 2013 milk production forecast now stands at 201.8 billion pounds – 0.7% more than was produced in 2012. Further growth of 1.3% in anticipated for 2014 bringing the total volume of milk forecast to be produced that year up to 204.5 billion pounds.
WASDE reports that export expectation have been raised for 2013 and also 2014 due to strong international demand for dairy products. Due to strong export demand, dairy product year end stocks for 2013 and 2014 have been reduced from previous forecasts.
Product price forecasts are mostly higher, with strong export demand and tightening supplies supporting increases for nonfat dry milk (NDM), butter and cheese prices in 2013 and 2014. The whey price forecast is unchanged for 2013 but raised for 2014.
The higher prices forecast are also expected to flow through to the farmgate level. Class III and Class IV price forecasts for 2013 and 2014 are higher. The all milk price is forecast at US$19.70 to $19.90 per cwt for 2013 and US$19.35 to $20.35 per cwt for 2014.
