Dairy Australia is warning that the sector has between two and five years to ensure it remains relevant on the global market.
A report released today into the future of the industry shows milk output has declined by 10 per cent over the past decade and Australia risks missing out opportunities to increase exports to Asia.
But Dairy Australia’s managing director, Ian Halliday, says he doesn’t believe in setting growth targets for the industry.
«We backed away from setting a target because it’s got to be around profitable volume growth, it can’t be just volume for the sake of growth,» he said.
«It’s really about ensuring that we tap into those markets that are going to deliver better returns.»
