Local milk producers are cashing on the dispute over New Zealand milk taking out massive ads in local media milk declaring that Sri Lankan liquid milk was pure, fresh and safe.Fonterra also ran full page ads proclaiming that its New Zealand-sourced milk was safe and has been for the past 30 years. However a separate Fonterra ad on its liquid milk entirely sourced from local Sri Lankan farmers, aimed at countering the blitz of publicity from local competitors, drew amusing comments from consumers. “Fonterra is saying Sri Lanka-sourced milk is safe at a time when there are questions about New Zealand milk. Are they saying Sri Lankan milk is safer than New Zealand milk,†one consumer asked.
Consumer activists also drew attention to a recent flurry of activity and publicity by Fonterra when its brand ambassador, award-winning New Zealand rugby captain Richie McCaw visited Sri Lanka in mid-March and met local dairy farmers, at a time when the New Zealand media awash with stories of the DCD issue which Sri Lankans were unaware of. “Was that visit a damage-control one in anticipation of the DCD issue eventually hitting the local media?†one activist asked.
