Fonterra’s chairman has dismissed claims he’ll keep holding the co-op’s reins after stepping down.
There has been criticism of Sir Henry van der Heyden’s decision to keep a spot on the dairy giant’s board of directors once he hands over power to chairman-elect John Wilson.
Sir Henry says he was asked to stay on to help ease Fonterra through the opening months of its Trading Among Farmers scheme.
But he says he’s looking forward to life beyond the co-op.
«I actually want to get on with my life at the end of the day,» he says.
«I’ve been in Fonterra for a long time. The co-operative is important to me, and I’ll always do what’s right for the co-op.»
The Fonterra chairman also dismissed suggestion the company’s board of directors instructs farmers on whom to vote for.
Questions have been raised over the make up of Fonterra’s share council, with suggestions the number of farmer representatives could drop from nine to eight.
Sir Henry says co-op elections are above board.
«We do not tell farmers which way to actually vote,» he says.
«The candidate assessment panel is an independent panel. It’s got an independent chair, it’s got the majority of independents on the panel.»
Fonterra’s farmer shareholders are expected to vote chairman-elect John Wilson back onto the board of directors, ushering his reign as chairman from December onwards.
