Dairy giant Fonterra is speaking out this morning, in a bid to calm international fears about the safety of its milk.Dicyandiamide, known as DCD, is used to stop nitrogen leaching on farms and has now been detected in exported New Zealand milk, triggering damning international headlines, and spooking some markets.
The company’s chief executive, Theo Spierings, says the contamination is at a very low level, and they don’t want consumers to panic.
“We do have strong science and we do have strong evidence providing assurances that all our products are safe, like I’ve said before, we’ve only found very, very [small], or minute traces of DCD in our products.â€
Mr Spierings says any safety fears are based on rumours, rather than facts.
«We don’t want to create panic here because any panic you create which is not based on facts can affect your business.»
