China’s food safety watchdog – the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine (AQSIQ) – has announced plans to introduce tougher regulations on the import and export of dairy products.Under the new regulations, any imported dairy product that fails to meet safety, health or environmental standards will likely be destroyed within three months, or returned to its country of origin.
The regulation, The Supervision and Management Regulation on the Inspection and Quarantine of Imported Dairy Products, will come into effect in May 2013.
The announcement comes just days after Chinese officials intensified their check on New Zealand dairy shipments over concern about the presence of agricultural chemical dicyandiamide (DCD) in milk products from the country.
