#New Zealand Exports of Whole Milk Powder Increase by 12.5%

New Zealand shipments of whole milk powder (WMP) in 2013 are yet to reflect the impacts the drought has had on milk production. 
The volume of WMP exported out of New Zealand (NZ) this year to date equates to just over 580,000 tons. This is 12.5% more than was exported during the same period in 2012, and 9% more than 2011. The high export volumes this year were a result of the excess volumes of milk that were produced in the first half of NZ’s 2012/13 dairying season. The later part of the season was a disappointment to many as the drought slashed milk in-takes.
This year export volumes are up for the majority of the main dairy commodities exported out of NZ including: skim milk powder (SMP), anhydrous milkfat (AMF), and cheese. Butter exports and whey exports are down this season but these products form only a relatively small part of NZ’s dairy export portfolio.
NZ’s total dairy exports this year are 9% up on last year, up to the end of May. However this figure is expected to fall away once data for the months of June, July and August become available.
The gain in export volumes by NZ was partially offset by Australian exports falling by 10.5%. Australia has managed to increase their exports of cheese, butter and anhydrous milkfat, but exports of other products fell significantly. WMP exports fell by 24%, while SMP exports dropped by 20%.
