Australia’s largest dairy company Devondale Murray Goulburn has opened a new factory at Laverton in Melbourne’s west.

The $80 million factory will see the co-operative deliver 200 million litres of fresh milk to Coles supermarkets each year, for the next decade.

Managing Director at Devondale Murray Goulburn Gary Helou says the deal, signed in April 2013, is worth $200 million each year.

«Supermarkets are important for farmers and for companies like Murray Goulburn.» he said.

«You need customers in business, and they are a big customers… the deal that we’ve signed with Coles is in the mutual interest of both parties.»

Devondale Murray Goulburn is set to open a similar factory at Erskine Park in New South Wales later this year. Together the factories will supply 400 supermarkets.

Mr Helou says «this deal (with Coles) locks in a margin for the farmers, so regardless of what the price on the shelf is – that’s a decision for the retailer and we can’t interfere with that. But the price we’re getting for our processed milk, is built on a formula that accommodates a farm gate price, plus a locked in margin.»

«It’s a good deal for Australian farmers, it’s a good deal for Murray Goulburn and it’s good deal for Coles» he said.

Mr Helou says «Devondale Murray Goulburn should have been in fresh milk a long time ago, we are now.»

«It’s a $2 billion turnover, over the next ten years.

«We’re going to grow it from there, it’s one of the biggest ideas in dairy foods in this country for the last ten or 15 years.» He said.

The Laverton factory has created 54 ongoing jobs for the company, which slashed 50 jobs from its regional factories in June.

The Prime Minister and the Victorian Premier both attended the opening.
