Many Leongatha locals work in the dairy industry and news that a local couple had won the jackpot was a bright spot in a gloomy time for many.
The couple wants to remain anonymous, but in a statement, they said they intended to share part of their big win with the local Leongatha community.
The owner of the local newsagency that sold the winning ticket, Deb Watchorn, said she was thrilled the town had some good news at a tough time.
«It’s not great times for our community, we all rally together and support each other, but this is a good news story,» Ms Watchorn said.
«Good luck just brings a little bit of sparkle to our town.»
She said it was great for locals to have some cheerful news.
«It gives them a brighter outlook,» she said.
«Even in times when sometimes we’re faced with challenging conditions, there is always a good news story, or good luck that can come your way.»
The winning couple claimed the prize late Friday after a three-day search for the winners.
In a statement released by the lottery company, the couple said they were still in shock over their division one win.
«It’s incredible … we’ve checked the numbers on our ticket over and over but they still haven’t changed!» the winning wife said in the statement.
The couple said they believed in giving back to their community.
«Giving some back is what it’s all about, we fully believe in that,» she said.
«This windfall is more than enough to look after our family and we’re not greedy, so all we’ve been thinking about is how else we can help.»
