The government’s dairy revitalisation programme is yielding positive results in the Midlands Province with statistics showing a 27% increase in milk production.
The dairy revitalisation programme was introduced through a private public partnership initiative.
The programme saw 24 small scale and four commercial farmers benefitting from 65 heifers that were purchased by government from South Africa.
Midlands Provincial Head for Livestock Production and Development and Chairman of Zimbabwe Dairy Farmers Association, Edward Warambwa expressed satisfaction with the current levels of milk production, adding that the revitalisation programme must be guarded to achieve maximum production.
The initiative is meant to increase milk production and reduce imports of milk and other dairy products into the country in line with provisions of Statutory Instrument 64 of 2016, which banned importation of milk and dairy products.
Midlands Province is the largest producer of milk, providing close to 25% of the country’s total milk volumes.
